The Giant Panda- an international symbol of Wildlife Conservation

Introduction Native to the mountain forests of southwest China, the giant panda is one of the most beloved animals in the world. and is the international symbol of Wildlife Conservation. Panda is the rarest member of the bear family, their distinctive black and white colouring makes them one of the best known species in the world, they can reach 1.9 m in height and weigh around 110 kg in females and 160 kg in males. Giant pandas live in bamboo forests in western regions of China. the giant pandas are adopted to live in trees with their broad paws with furry undersides and long retractile claws that help them grip when climbing trees. Between 95 and 160 days of becoming pregnant, the female panda will give birth. The newborn cub is blind, hairless, and tiny, weighing only 85-140 g (3-5 oz.). KrisztiĂ¡n Gyöngyi, an Ecologist, was killed by a rhinoceros in Akagera National Park in Rwanda.

This was confirmed in a statement issued by the park management yesterday, Wednesday June 7,  and can been seen as a loss for all who knew Kris and for rhino conservation across the continent. “It is with utmost regret that I inform you that KrisztiĂ¡n Gyöngyi was killed this morning by a rhinoceros in   Akagera National Park  in Rwanda while out tracking animals in the park. Kris was instrumental in supporting the reintroduction efforts of the black rhino into Friends of Akagera National Park, and was on the ground training rangers how to track and protect them,’ Peter Fearnhead CEO of   African Parks  said. While his family has been informed, details of the incident are still being gathered. The Rhinoceros is a truly fascinating creature, The Akagera National Park reintroduced black  rhinos back to Rwanda in 2017 after the last rhino was seen in the Akagera National Park 10 years ago due to excessive poaching by hunters. The Rwandan government decided to locate the Rhinos back in Akagera National Park because it is the only safe Savannah region in the country.  The Rhinoceros belong to a taxonomic order called Perissodactyle or odd toed ungulates which makes them more closely related to the equids (Horses and Zebras) than the likes of Elephants or Hippopotamuses. The male rhino can reach a staggering 2,300 kg and measure 5.5 ft. Rhinos can feed on grass or being browsers that gorge on fruits and leaves attached to the bushes.
